Heaven Sent

Proving that nothing compares to a model on the cover of a fashion magazine, are the latest selection of covers from four of my preferred publications; W, The Last Magazine, Russh and Purple. The word iconic springs to mind at first glance of W Magazine's March 2012 issue featuring Kate Moss captured in a heavenly robe and veil by Steven Klein. Fellow veteran Malgosia Bela looks every bit the natural beauty with minimal hair and makeup for the cover of the Last Magazine shot by Josh Olins. Shutterbug Terry Richardson assembles a trio of dynamic models Aymeline Valade, Saskia de Brauw and Daria Strokous for Purple Magazine. And last but not least, Aussie publication Russh shows plenty of love for model Mirte Maas lensed by Hugh Lippe.

An Intimate View

Whatever your opinion may be of photographer Terry Richardson, there is no denying that he is one of the most influential and prominent figures in the worlds of modelling and fashion. Richardson's scope as a photographer can be witnessed in publications such as US Vogue, Vogue Paris, V Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harpers Bazaar, Purple, Industrie and i-D. Not surprisingly, Richardson's studio plays host to the who's who of modelling talent from iconic models Kate Moss, Daria Werbowry and Gisele Bundchen, to established stars Abbey Lee Kershaw, Freja Beha Erichsen and Lara Stone, and to a slew of young hopefuls. Cruise Mode

V Magazine's Model Issue serves up four alternate covers featuring eight of modelling's most illuminating faces captured by Terry Richardson. Joan Smalls, Daphne Groeneveld, Saskia de Brauw, Candice Swanepoel, Sui He, Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, Lindsey Wixson and Bambi Northwood-Blyth are paired off wearing the best of the Cruise collections styled by Carine Roitfeld. The models sport fluorescent eye shadow, candy-coloured spandex leggings and vibrant prints to brighten up the dreary Winter months ahead. Models appear to be making a come-back as cover subjects with Roitfeld anointing Smalls et al. as the "next generation of supermodels." Speaking with WWD, Roitfeld enthuses, "These eight girls are unique. It's their diversity that makes each of them, to me, truly modern. They bring a new energy to fashion."

America's Sweetheart

America's favourite sweetheart Karlie Kloss turned nineteen this past August and appears to be embracing adulthood, displaying a more provocative side in recent editorials for Allure and British Vogue, lensed respectively by Mario Testino and Terry Richardson. I have always been a fan of Kloss' gamine beauty and was blown away by her seamless transition into adulthood as evidenced at the recent Spring/Summer 2012 shows. Kloss who has been modelling since she was fifteen, looked riveting on the runway as she opened for Blumarine, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano, and closed for Christian Dior, Lanvin, Elie Saab, Blumarine and Rodarte, displaying a sophisticated and stealth-like beauty that is simply breathtaking.

The Unstoppable Sui He

Chinese model Sui He tops off an incredible Spring/Summer 2012 show season with a history making cover appearance for W Magazine's November 2012 art issue. Lensed by Max Vadukal with art direction by Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei, the cover features Sui He being wrestled to the ground by two unknown assailants. The cover image and accompanying editorial shot in New York, is reminiscent of Weiwei's photographic work from the Eighties Tompkin Square riots.

Sui He's appearance on the cover of W is a first for models of Asian descent and is likely to cement He's status as a true contender amongst the new generation of models. He was one of the stand out faces at the Spring/Summer 2012 shows, appearing at only the most coveted shows including Altuzarra, Donna Karan, Prabal Gurung, Michael Kors, Peter Som, Oscar de la Renta, Antonio Berardi, Acne, Max Mara, Dolce Gabbana, Costume National, Hussein Chalayan, Thierry Mugler, Lanvin, Hermes and Chanel.   He's pristine beauty, killer physique and versatility in front of the lens have her marked as one of the "it" girls of the season.
