Casting Crisis

T Magazine went behind the scenes at castings for three of New York Fashion Week's biggest shows - 3.1 Phillip Lim, Altuzarra and Band of Outsiders. Booking a spot in any of the three line-ups for 3.1 Phillip Lim, Altuzarra and Band of Outsiders, guarantees a model maximum exposure and a berth that may potentially carry through to the shows in London, Paris and Milan. With casting directors Kannon Rajah at the helm for Altuzarra and whiz kid Daniel Peddle keeping a close eye on proceedings at 3.1 Phillip Lim and Band of Outsiders, every established model and newcomer worth talking about, was ready to be put through their paces.

Cover Girls

I've got to say that I am a sucker for a great cover shot. Give me a gorgeous cover with a beautiful model as subject and I will gladly purchase a magazine without even peeking at its content. December 2012 is shaping up to be a particularly festive period, with a  slew of innovative covers featuring models hitting the newsstands. Kate Moss channels David Bowie for Paris Vogue, Karlie Kloss continues her winning streak for French Numéro, newcomer Marique Schimmel goes Indie for the hip Aussie publication Russh and Lindsey Wixson is Muse's December Golden Girl. For me, models and photographers have always played an integral role in fashion magazine's identity. I remember the days when the names of photographers such as Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Gilles Bensimon and Steven Meisel were synonymously tied in with specific publications. I stopped purchasing US Harpers Bazaar (post-Liz Tilberis) and W Magazine when the covers began to resemble the latest cover of In Style. These days I anticipate instead, the arrival of the latest issues of publications including Paris and Italia Vogue, French Numéro, Russh and i-D.

An Intimate View

Whatever your opinion may be of photographer Terry Richardson, there is no denying that he is one of the most influential and prominent figures in the worlds of modelling and fashion. Richardson's scope as a photographer can be witnessed in publications such as US Vogue, Vogue Paris, V Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harpers Bazaar, Purple, Industrie and i-D. Not surprisingly, Richardson's studio plays host to the who's who of modelling talent from iconic models Kate Moss, Daria Werbowry and Gisele Bundchen, to established stars Abbey Lee Kershaw, Freja Beha Erichsen and Lara Stone, and to a slew of young hopefuls. Richardson's studio shots as featured on terrysdiary.com, capture the raw, natural beauty of his subjects whilst depicting a unique intimacy and camaraderie between model and photographer.

Cruise Mode

V Magazine's Model Issue serves up four alternate covers featuring eight of modelling's most illuminating faces captured by Terry Richardson. Joan Smalls, Daphne Groeneveld, Saskia de Brauw, Candice Swanepoel, Sui He, Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, Lindsey Wixson and Bambi Northwood-Blyth are paired off wearing the best of the Cruise collections styled by Carine Roitfeld. The models sport fluorescent eye shadow, candy-coloured spandex leggings and vibrant prints to brighten up the dreary Winter months ahead. Models appear to be making a come-back as cover subjects with Roitfeld anointing Smalls et al. as the "next generation of supermodels." Speaking with WWD, Roitfeld enthuses, "These eight girls are unique. It's their diversity that makes each of them, to me, truly modern. They bring a new energy to fashion."
