Heaven Sent

Proving that nothing compares to a model on the cover of a fashion magazine, are the latest selection of covers from four of my preferred publications; W, The Last Magazine, Russh and Purple. The word iconic springs to mind at first glance of W Magazine's March 2012 issue featuring Kate Moss captured in a heavenly robe and veil by Steven Klein. Fellow veteran Malgosia Bela looks every bit the natural beauty with minimal hair and makeup for the cover of the Last Magazine shot by Josh Olins. Shutterbug Terry Richardson assembles a trio of dynamic models Aymeline Valade, Saskia de Brauw and Daria Strokous for Purple Magazine. And last but not least, Aussie publication Russh shows plenty of love for model Mirte Maas lensed by Hugh Lippe.

By Invitation Only

What do you get when you throw a bunch of massive pythons, bejewelled masquerade masks, tuxedo suits, Steven Meisel and models Aymeline Valade, Marte Mei van Haaster and Othilia Simon into the mix? Well..., Lanvin's Spring/Summer 2012 campaign and my idea of the perfect dinner party. Donning Lanvin's sleek, figure-hugging silhouettes and incognito shades, Valade, van Haaster and Simon bring an air of excitement, mystery and danger to the table flanked by male models Aaron Vernon, Johannes Schulze and Angus Lowe.  The brilliant casting of Valade, van Haaster and Simon, each of whom possesses that rare mix of androgyny and womanly allure results in a campaign that is intoxicating and transfixing.

Better With Age

Hot on the heels of Saskia de Brauw and Aymeline Valade comes twenty three year old classic French beauty Julia Frauche. Frauche was the standout star of the Spring/Summer 2012 collections in September with "who's that girl" appearances at Calvin Klein, Altuzarra, Jason Wu, Reed Krakoff, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Celine, Balenciaga, Chanel, Chloé, Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana and Marni. With a show list that reads like the who's who of the fashion elite, you could be forgiven for assuming that Frauche was yet another overnight modelling success story. Scouted at the age of sixteen in the south of France, Frauche had zero interest in modelling and was focused instead on her education. Upon graduation, Frauche relocated to Paris to attend college and was approached again to model. It was at this time that Frauche chose to give modelling a try.

Following five years of grunt modelling, scraping by with commercial editorial work and money jobs to pay the bills, Frauche switched representation to Next Model Management and decided to give the show circuit one final shot. In an interview with the Cut, Frauche explains "I have been doing this job for five years and I was like, "Okay this is my last chance. I'm going to try the shows and this is going to be the last time for me." The gamble paid off, with Frauche charming casting agents and designers with her mature outlook and womanly allure. Dubbed "baby Raquel" by casting agent James Scully for her likeness to Brazilian supermodel Raquel Zimmermann, Frauche is self-effacing in spite of the buzz surrounding her new found success. Speaking again with the Cut, Frauche recalls "This season, everyone was like, "Oh you're baby Raquel." But it's a really good compliment for me; I'm really happy about it because I love her. She's beautiful, and I hear she's nice, too."

Frauche has since landed on the pristine pages of American Vogue, Paris Vogue, German Vogue, Dazed & Confused, Intermission, and French Numero, displaying an insouciance and a versatility that women of all ages can relate to. The recent success stories of models well into their twenties, like Kati Nescher and Frauche, heralds a shift in the fashion paradigm towards models that women can identify with rather than a fifteen year old playing dress-ups. As Frauche reveals succinctly to the Cut, "I was a really shy person when I started, so it took time for me to learn how to communicate with people. I learned by travelling, being by myself all the time. I'm more mature now and I know what I want to do." It is this confidence and innate sense of self, coupled with a beauty that is mesmerising which will have Frauche marked as one of the definitive models of the next generation.

Coming on Strong

The Spring/Summer 2012 shows were dominated by a select group of second-season models, determined to prove that they are here to stay. Aymeline Valade, Sui He, Nyasha Matonhodze, Emily Baker, Josephine Skriver, Zuzanna Bijoch, Roberta Narciso, Kate King, Fei Fei Sun and Julia Nobis left a blistering trail behind them as they collectively eclipsed the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris. In an industry which discards newcomers faster than you can say "exclusive", it's reassuring to witness a new generation of models who possess real potential staying power. This diverse group of beauties possess three common denominators; they are all distinctly beautiful, versatile in the looks that they are able to portray, and bring an energy and character to the runway that has been missing in seasons past. If you're looking to put the Super back into the modelling industry, look no further.

Breaking the Mould

V Magazine's up-coming model issue promises to be a humdinger of an issue if this preview editorial is anything to go by. Daniele Duella & Iango Henzi photograph modelling's most alluring faces in the latest haute couture offerings. Saskia de Brauw, Emily Baker, Joan Smalls, Candice Swanepoel, Zuzanna Bijoch, Aymeline Valade, Kristina Salinovic and Valerija Kelava round up the diverse cast of beauties. With an emphasis on individual beauty and diversity at the recent Spring/Summer 2012 collections, it appears that the fashion industry may finally be responding to market demand for models who are distinguishable from one another and who represent beauty in all of its guises.

Boulevard of Dreams

During Paris Fashion Week, casting agent Andrew Weir captured some of the standout faces of the Spring/Summer 2012 season as they descended on Boulevard Montmartre. Paris is the last stop on the S/S 2012 Fashion calendar and following a month of relentless castings, fittings and sleep deprivation, it's no wonder these girls look as though they could do with some R&R. I was in Paris for the final days of fashion week and sighted several harried models scurrying all over the city in a state of flux.
