Sitting Pretty

Casting and Management Company, Confessions of a Casting Director (COACD) is my ultimate resource for polaroid shots of modelling's newest talent. Based in New York, COACD's advertising client roster includes Levis, Uniqlo, Diesel, Adidas, Macy's and Neiman Marcus. A favourable impression on casting guru Douglas Perrett and his team at COACD, can land a model in the pages of Mixte, Dazed & Confused, Wonderland, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Interview and Love Magazine.

The Countdown Begins...

With less than a week to go before the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show kicks off, chat forums are abuzz with speculation as to which models will make the final line-up for what is inarguably one of the most lucrative jobs for any model. The casting process for the coveted 30 or so spots that make up the show's cast is gruelling. Modelinia.com got the inside scoop at a casting last week at the Victoria's Secret HQ, as models lined the hallways outside the casting room waiting for their opportunity to wow casting director John Pfeiffer and his team.

Josephine Skriver

Spotted at the casting were familiar faces Lily Donaldson, Emanuela de Paula, Constance Jablonski, Arelnis Sosa, Katsia Zingarevich, Maryna Linchuk and Shannan Click, all of whom have previously walked in the show. With only 10 to 15 spots up for grabs for Victoria's Secret newbies, the pressure was on for Britt Maren, Jourdan Dunn, Jasmine Tookes, Josephine Skriver, Alyssa Miller, Shanina Sheik, Elsa Hosk, Sui He, Frida Gustavsson, Anais Mali, Bregje Heinen and Juju Ivanyuk amongst others to impress.

Speaking with modelinia.com, John Pfeiffer shed light on the casting process, noting that "Just because a girl has walked before doesn't mean she'll walk again. Everything from their bodies to their overall look changes, so we have to see them again and again." Pfeiffer keeps an eye out for potential Victoria's Secret runway candidates throughout the year and has his radar firmly set on a number of faces, "Bregje (Heinen) is finally 18 so we were really excited to see her. Karlie (Kloss) is also of age this year, so hopefully she'll walk the show."

Candice Swanepoel, Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Lily Aldridge, Chanel Iman, Behati Prinsloo, Doutzen Kroes, Lais Ribeiro, Izabel Goulart, Lindsay Ellington and Erin Heatherton have so far been confirmed for the show. In the meantime, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for hopefuls Toni Garrn, Melodie Monrose, Sui He, Jourdan Dunn, Karlie Kloss, Shanina Shaik, Chrishell Stubbs, Anais Mali and Milou Sluis.

Coming on Strong

The Spring/Summer 2012 shows were dominated by a select group of second-season models, determined to prove that they are here to stay. Aymeline Valade, Sui He, Nyasha Matonhodze, Emily Baker, Josephine Skriver, Zuzanna Bijoch, Roberta Narciso, Kate King, Fei Fei Sun and Julia Nobis left a blistering trail behind them as they collectively eclipsed the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris. In an industry which discards newcomers faster than you can say "exclusive", it's reassuring to witness a new generation of models who possess real potential staying power. This diverse group of beauties possess three common denominators; they are all distinctly beautiful, versatile in the looks that they are able to portray, and bring an energy and character to the runway that has been missing in seasons past. If you're looking to put the Super back into the modelling industry, look no further.

Danish Treat

Unique Models Frederikke Winther has the kind of beauty that is so pristine it hurts to look at. Standing at 178cm, this willowy brunette, brown/green eyed newcomer has recently been featured on Unique Models agency blog. Hailing from Charlottenlund in Denmark, Winther has been signed with Unique Models since 2008 and is currently on their development board. With the recent success of Danish models like Josephine Skriver, Gertrud Hegelund, Caroline Brasch Nielsen and Juliane Grüner the timing could well be right for Winther to make her debut at the Spring/Summer shows in September.

Crossing Over

I can barely contain my excitement over Vogue Italia's July edition which features a divine editorial lensed by Steven Meisel with the very best of the new crop of models. The cast of exuberant new faces includes Emily Baker, Kelly Mittendorf, Anais Pouliot, Fei Fei Sun, Antonia Wesseloh, Juliane Grüner and Josephine Skriver. The energy on set crackles with each turn of the page as Baker et al., duke it out for Meisel's approval. Each girl is resplendent in looks from the Fall/Winter 2011 collections by Louis Vuitton, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci styled by Karl Templer. I truly cannot pick a favourite out of this group of newbies as each model is distinctly beautiful and poses like a seasoned professional. I have a feeling though that this select group of models will reshape the landscape of modelling over the next few years.
