Tunisian Dream

With the constant influx of new models inundating the fashion industry each season, it's easy to become a little blasé about beauty. Every now and then though, a new face pops up who sends a shock wave through fashion circles. That very girl is twenty-one year old Tunisian, Hanaa Ben Abdesslem.

Hailing from Nabeul, this exotic, androgynous beauty is a true stand out. Measuring at 179 cm, the statuesque Ben Abdesslem made her runway debut in the Vivienne Westwood Spring/Summer 2011 show. Three months later, Ben Abdesslem's modelling options kicked into overdrive with a career defining Jean Sebergesque haircut which garnered her the attention of Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci. Ben Abdesslem landed a Givenchy couture exclusive and has since been photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Knoepfel & Indlekofer and Karim Sadli for Paris Vogue, Terry Richardson for V, Mario Sorrenti for Vogue Italia, and Terry Tsiolis for W.

Whilst some would be quick to pidgeon-hole Ben Abdesslem as a quirky androgynous type, there is no denying however that she possesses a delicate beauty, femininity and elegance which will translate to commercial viability. Lancome cosmetics appears to agree, having signed Ben Abdesslem to join its stable of beauties including Arlenis Sosa and Daria Werbowry, as one of the faces of its Fall/Winter 2011 Visionnaire campaign.

What I find most alluring about Ben Abdesslem is that hers is a beauty that has been untapped and unrepresented in the fashion industry. Aside from Moroccan model Hind Sahli, I am unable to recall any other models of North African descent working in fashion today. In an interview with US Vogue, Ben Abdesslem alludes to the divide between the world of fashion and her cultural background, "...seeking a modelling career has been a dream of mine for a long time. To me, modelling is an expression of freedom, a career choice that goes beyond the barriers of culture and tradition in my country." I for one, am delighted that Ben Abdesslem is fulfilling her dream and hope to see a lot more of this enigmatic beauty in the years to come.

New Kids On the Block

The folks over at COACD have been working around the clock in the lead up to New York Fashion Week sifting through the new faces on offer for this season. Judging by the polaroids featured on COACD's twitter page from castings held over the past month, the competition will be extreme with exciting  modelling prospects heralding from the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, China, France, Brazil, Trinidad and the USA. The new girls this season have a distinctly United Nations vibe, with "good old fashioned - pretty" being the common denominator. Whether it be the va-va-voom allure of Portuguese bombshell Sara Sampaio or the Parisian chic of Vitoria Tuaz and the all-American wholesome looks of Josilyn Williams, what all of these girls possess is a commercial appeal and accessibility which casting agents will no doubt be tapping into to help put a smile on consumer's faces.

In the Mix

W Magazine remodels the seventies with its March 2011 editorial lensed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Styled by Alex White, the editorial features a who's who cast of modelling talent including Karolina Kurkova, Adriana Lima, Raquel Zimmerman, Anja Rubik, Hind Sahli, Anna de Rijk, Tasha Tilberg, Crystal Renn, Izabel Goulart, Delfine Bafort and Karlie Kloss, decked out in 70's revivalist fashion by Diane Von Furstenberg, Dolce Gabbana, Chloé, Jean Paul Gaulthier and Roberto Cavalli. It's wonderful to see a mix of newcomers, established names and veteran models like Tilberg and Bafort bringing an element of surprise to this 70's glam-inspired editorial.

Triple threat

In an industry that is literally inundated with hundreds of new models every season, it is a near impossibility to pinpoint which girls will go on to reach the highest echelons within the modelling world. I am hoping that 2011 will be the year that Hind Sahli, Renata Sozzi and Chrishell Stubbs will make their mark. All three models are breathtakingly beautiful with incredible bone structure, flawless skin and athletic bodies. What these three budding models also have in common, is that indefinable "it" factor which makes them not only standout but also memorable.

Turks and Caicos native, nineteen year old Chrishell is a star on the ascent. Represented by Supreme in New York, Chrishell has the kind of mesmerising beauty which will enable her to appeal to both commercial and high fashion clients. With careful management and direction, Chrishell has all the makings of a top model. During her first show season, Chrishell walked for Jean Paul Gaulthier, Diane Von Furstenburg, Catherine Malandrino, Cynthia Steffe, Vera Wang, Erin Fetherston and Ralph Lauren. Chrishell's campaign credits include  Ralph Lauren, Benetton, Pinko and H&M Urban Vibes Divided.

Brazilian newcomer Renata Sozzi has already appeared twice on the cover of Vogue Brazil and has only been based in New York since February 2010, where she is represented by Marilyn Model Management. Nineteen year old Renata stands at 173 cm in height and has a face made for beauty and a body predestined for Victoria's Secret fame.  Often compared to fellow Brazilian supermodel Isabeli Fontana, Renata has some big shoes to fill but is on the right path having scored editorials for Vogue Italia, French Revue des Modes and Teen Vogue as well as appearing in campaigns for Replay and Benetton.

Twenty year old Hind Sahli hails from Morocco and is represented by DNA Models in New York. Hind was photographed by Steven Meisel for the May 2010 issue of Vogue Italia and has already landed campaigns for Top Shop, Benetton and Armani Jeans. The 178 cm beauty has walked for the likes of Herve Leger, 3.1 Philip Lim, Isaac Mizrahi, Vera Wang, Louis Vuitton, Kenzo and Jean Paul Gaulthier. In an interview with WWD, Hind reveals her lofty aspirations; to appear on the the cover of Vogue and to tread the runway for Victoria's Secret.
