Tribal Child

California girl Hailey Clauson shows her versatility as a model in this beguiling editorial shot by Sebastian Kim for Numero issue no. 124. Since her debut at the Spring/Summer 2011 shows where she walked for the likes of Calvin Klein, Gucci, Versace, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton, Clauson has continued to build on that momentum by posing for such industry heavy-weights as Patrick Demarchelier for LOVE Magazine, Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for W Magazine, Terry Tsiolis for V Man, Ellen Von Unwerth for i-D Magazine, and Peter Lindbergh for Numero. Clauson had an equally impressive Spring/Summer 2011 campaign season, appearing in campaigns for Gucci, DSquared2 and Jill Stuart. Clauson's ability to combine wholesome all-American appeal with a sophistication belying her sixteen years of age is her trump card. Having recently switched representation from Marilyn to Next Models, I predict that Clauson will be a major force in the modelling world in the years to come.

Model as Muse

Modelling's newest rising stars serve as inspiration for a series of paintings by artist Danny Roberts, commissioned for models.com's MDX. Roberts portraits are based on various existing images of Arizona Muse, Melodie Monrose, Iris Egbers, Hailey Clauson, Julia Saner, Daphne Groeneveld, Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Britt Maren, with the artist imbuing each canvass with his own unique perspective. Roberts captures the individual nuances of each model from the understated elegance of Monrose, to the bohemian chic of Northwood-Blyth and the haunting beauty of Muse. The end results are pure magic and hark back to the days when models served as Muse beyond the world of fashion.

Changing of the guard

Every few years, a new group of models emerge from the sea of faces which flood the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris each season. This was evident during the recent SS11 collections.  An emphasis amongst designers and casting directors alike towards models with personality, individuality and larger than life beauty, heralds a return to the supermodel type in the mold of Linda, Naomi and Christy during the late 80s and early 90s. The following twelve new faces embody this shift in aesthetics toward models with true supermodel potential.

1. Kirsi Pyrhonen
Seventeen year old Kirsi hails from Finland and is represented by DNA in New York. Pyrhonen's unique, other-worldly beauty, feline features and hypnotic gaze landed her 20 blue chip bookings during the SS11 collections, including the likes of Balenciaga, Givenchy and Louis Vuitton.

New Zealand model Jessica Clarke was first tipped by top US casting director Ashley Brokaw, in the lead up to SS11, as a face to watch. In an interview with the NY Times, Brokaw described Clarke as "classic supermodel material." Lofty praise for a newcomer which Clarke lived up to by scoring a New York Fashion Week Calvin Klein exclusive. Clarke's perfectly symmetrical bone structure, mesmerising baby blues and willowy 180 cm frame make her one of the most exciting new prospects in recent times.
