Givenchy's Asian Odyssey

Givenchy's Spring 2011 Haute Couture presentation featured a cast of solely Asian models. Designer Riccardo Tisci's cast of beauties featured ten of the most prominent Asian models hailing from China, Japan and Korea. Veterans Ai Tominaga and Du Juan joined Liu Wen, Shu Pei Qin, Ming Xi, Fei Fei Sun, Hye Park, Jiang Xiao Yi, Tao Okamoto and So Young Kang in an intimate presentation of the collection inspired by Japanese robot toys and legendary Japanese dancer Kazuo Ohno. Tisci's influence in the modelling world is fast becoming folklore with many a model's career skyrocketing following an appearance in a Givenchy show. The question now is which of these Asian warrior beauties will dominate the upcoming Fall/Winter 2011 shows.

Tough Chic

Indigenous model, Samantha Harris is on the cusp of becoming Australia's next big modelling export. The statuesque 180 cm tall beauty, was discovered in the 2004 Girlfriend Model Search competition alongside eventual winner, Abbey Lee Kershaw. Harris was signed on the spot by Chic Models in Sydney and is also represented in New York by Next Models.

In an industry that is saturated with beautiful girls, twenty year old Harris' exotic looks, soft doe eyed features and bee stung lips set her apart from the pack. Harris' striking features are the product of a hybrid mix of Aboriginal and German lineage. In an interview with the National, Harris acknowledges that her Indigenous background adds to her allure, "It gives me an advantage, there is no one else around who looks like me."

In June 2010, Harris made the cover of Australian Vogue, making her only the second Aboriginal model to appear on the cover since Elaine George's appearance in 1993. In an interview with the National, Australian Vogue Editor Kirstie Clements, insists that the decision to put Harris on the cover was not politically motivated, "Samantha is just extraordinary, and it's a happy and wonderful coincidence that she's indigenous."

Chic agent, Kathy Ward has carefully nurtured and navigated Harris' path through the modelling world. In 2006, Harris scored a major coup when she was flown to New York to be photographed by Patrick Demarchelier for Glamour magazine. Speaking with ninemsn.com, Ward recalls how following the plum assignment, Next Models were keen for Harris to take on more international bookings. Ward at the time however was adamant, "She's not ready, she's not mature enough yet and she just wouldn't cope being out there on her own, so it's not negotiable until she finishes school. But there's no doubt, the opportunities for Samantha will be endless, she's on the radar, she's out there." Ward adds that "There's absolutely no urgency, confidence is vital. If that means waiting another season and a half to launch a girl, we'll do it. You only get one chance when you meet the big names so we're prepared to invest the time to develop a girl."

For a model who has not been officially launched on the international modelling circuit, Harris has garnered significant support and interest. Photographers adore her; Robert Erdmann calls her, "the most ravishing thing that I know of" and David Bailey predicts a great future for her, "She has a real innocence in how she works that's very unaffected. She doesn't pose; she's very open and natural, which is great." Clements who has become one of Harris' most ardent supporters, having made her one of Australian Vogue's staple models, adds that "She has a quiet elegance that sets her apart, she's top drawer."

In the last 12 months, Harris has evolved into a truly versatile model, capable of conveying a broad range of editorial and runway looks.  I am hoping that 2011 is the year that Harris makes her mark on an international scale at the Fall/Winter shows in February. In an interview with the Sun Herald, Harris says, "I'll definitely go to New York some time in the future, which will be exciting and hopefully they will love me over there." I have no doubt that Harris would thrive in New York and yes, they will love her over there as much as we do.

The Ultimate Russh

I have been based in Berlin for six months, having moved here from the sunny shores of Sydney, Australia in July 2010. My first  two thoughts upon arriving in Berlin were, "I hope I will be able to cope with the arduous winter here and secondly, will I be able to find my favourite glossies in order to get my much needed fix of fashion and models."

Berlin is an international city and an epicentre of creativity for artists, writers and anyone seeking a level of self-expression. I was delighted therefore to find that not only were my much loved American and European magazines readily available but so was the ultra-cool Russh Magazine from my hometown.

Russh Magazine was created in September 2004 and is published bi-monthly. The magazine has a strong emphasis on personal style with a distinctly Australian flavour which is endearing, intriguing and honest. What I love most about Russh, is that the editorial content and cover shots are always original, unpredictable and innovative. This little Aussie hipster publication stays true to it's roots but is clearly international in it's mindset. Russh features only the top tier models from around the globe in  homegrown and international fashions. The styling and concepts of the editorials are exciting and fresh and do not follow a set formulaic approach.

In the words of Russh editor Stevie Dance, "Russh, she is the mystery girl you want to befriend but are just a tad intimidated by. That is, until you realise that she is just as dorky as you, in the coolest kind of way."

Picture Perfect

Danish supermodel Renee Simonsen was the ultimate embodiment of beauty during the Eighties. In 1982, a then seventeen year old Simonsen, entered and won the Ford Supermodel of the World contest. Simonsen signed with Ford Models and was whisked off to New York where she quickly captivated the modelling world with her voluptuous pout, piercing blue eyes and healthy good looks.

Simonsen's perfectly symmetrical bone structure, luminous skin and dazzling smile made her one of the most celebrated models of the Eighties, with numerous appearances on the covers of American Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, Self and Cosmopolitan. Simonsen's fuller figure and naturally athletic body made her a firm favourite with ELLE magazine and landed her two consecutive appearances in Sports Illustrated's famed Swimsuit issue. Throughout her modelling career, Simonsen's face has been the star of beauty campaigns for Cover Girl, Revlon, Biotherm, Clarins and Vichy cosmetics.

In 1989, at the very height of her modelling fame, Simonsen decided to take a break from modelling and the fast paced New York lifestyle. Simonsen had recently recovered from a serious liver infection and had also ended her relationship with Duran Duran bass player John Taylor to whom she had been briefly engaged. Deciding that she needed to assess her life and future, Simonsen went to Israel for three months to live on a kibbutz.

In an interview with Danish magazine Name it, Simonsen reveals that she had started suffering severe anxiety attacks to the point that she could no longer stand being in front of a camera. "If I had stuck around a bit longer, I may have lost touch with what really mattered to me - I had to find out if I really wanted to stay with my pop star boyfriend and travel the world. People tend to think that celebrity life is the ultimate dream - but when you are actually living that life you know that it is not all that glamorous."

The following year, Simonsen retired from modelling and returned to Denmark to finish her high school education and to study child psychology at university. In an interview with Wallpaper magazine, Simonsen explains that "I wanted to do something where I was using other parts of my body. It seemed to me that Scandinavian girls always had some idea of returning home and were working to that end. In an industry where you have to fight to remain yourself, they seemed to hold onto the core of who they were. They stayed true to their roots."

In 2002, Simonsen completed her psychology degree and is an award winning author of children's books and novels, and the director of an internet-based start up company called delebarn.dk. The website provides an online service to assist divorced parents with planning and scheduling challenges. Simonsen now lives in Aarhus with her husband Danish musician Thomas Helmig and their four children.

Paul Rowland's Vision

Ford's Supermodel of the World 2011 has been held in New York with the Philippines Danica Magpantay taking home the honours. Seventeen year old Magpantay beat finalists from Lithuania and Poland to become the first ever Filipino and second Asian beauty to win the prestigious title. South Korean Hyoni Kang won the Supermodel of the World competition in 2008. Magpantay receives a $250,000 modelling contract with Ford Models as part of the prize cache. The contest was established in 1980 by Eileen Ford and showcases aspiring models from over 50 countries in order to discover new talent for the fashion industry.

In 2010, Ford Models appointed modelling maestro Paul Rowland, creator and owner of Supreme and Women Management, to reinvigorate and reinvent Ford's image and roster of beauties. In an interview with the Cut, Rowland insists "My vision is very different from Eileen Ford's. My ideal legacy at Ford would be to open up the idea of beauty not only being classic but being, global. I'm just obsessed with finding these amazing creatures in all these exotic countries." Magpantay is no doubt part of Rowland's vision for Ford, to encompass a standard of beauty that is modern, bold, and challenges the fashion industry's notion of beauty.

Magpantay hopes that the Supermodel title will enable her to pursue a modelling career internationally, working with the world's top designers and perhaps one day treading the runway for Victoria's Secret. Speaking with tongueinchic.com, Magapantay says "I like Lara Stone, Freja Beha, Constance Jablonski, Chanel Iman, Alessandra Ambrosio and all the Victoria's Secret Angels - they have rockin' bodies!"

The 175cm tall, Visual Communications student has her feet firmly planted on the ground, "Modelling is not as sparkly as it sounds. I thought it was just about walking, posing and being pretty, but there's actually more to it than that. I still have tons of things to know and experience myself. Just be confident but never arrogant and always be humble." Modelling for only six months, Magpantay lists rejection and criticism as the most difficult aspects, "Modelling like any other job, is about qualifying for the job. If you're not the face they're looking for, then it's okay. Every model has a different look and each one is beautiful. If you're not chosen, than that job must not be for you."

Indeed Magpantay has a look that is exotic yet still beautiful in a classic sense. With amazing long limbs, beautiful almond shaped eyes framed by impossibly high cheekbones and square jawline, Magpantay  is an exciting modelling prospect for the future.
